Cookworthy on the Quay

Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum presents its fourth exhibition of photographs at Harbour House, including 19th and early 20th Century images of Kingsbridge, Salcombe and the surrounding area selected from a vast archive of over 12,000 images.
This temporary exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of our local area, and includes:
Then and Now:
A photographic exhibition comparing 19th and early 20th century images of Kingsbridge and surrounding villages from the museum collection with modern images of the same places.
Evacuation: A tale of three villages:
A DVD telling the story of the evacuation of Slapton Sands. Containing rare archive footage, photographs and interviews with residents of the area, it paints a picture of life before the War, the build up to the evacuation, life during it and the eventual return.
Mystery objects:
Get your hands on some unusual objects. Can you guess what they were used for?
Photograph Kiosk:
Browse and search the museum’s vast photographic archive. Many of the images have been gifted to the museum as plates, negatives or prints, as more people come to realise the value of allowing the material to be archived for future generations. Prints will also be available to order in A4 or A3 size, so you can take a slice of local history with you.

You can visit Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum in the Old Grammar School on Fore Street, Kingsbridge (open 10:30 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday until November this year).
The museum also houses the Local Heritage Resource Centre, which contains parish records, tithe maps, local history books, Grammar School records and local newspapers on microfilm. The resource centre is open Monday to Thursday 10 am - 12 noon (and until 3 pm on Wednesdays). Other times are available by appointment.
