Contemporary Passions - Elements
Annual summer exhibition by members of the South Hams Arts Forum.
Opening view and opportunity to meet the artists: Tuesday 16 July, 6 – 8 pm.
Cherry Lyons, well known for her plein air watercolours and her mixed media works, has recently been exploring the ancient art of encaustics – ideal for responding to the elements of air, water, fire and earth. Crystel Dauth works in epoxy resin and acrylics to produce contemporary works with vibrant colour and strong texture. The elements in nature are a strong influence, particularly water as she spent ten years sailing around the Caribbean.
Stephen Thomas also responds to the element of water in his paintings, working in watercolour, acrylic and oil paint to portray reflection, sparkle and spray, and Elaine Sibley’s paintings evoke the ever-changing moods of Dartmoor and the local coastline.
Teresa Barlow’s delightful pictures of people at play express her love of unexpected detail, intense colour and a sense of anticipation. She works in printmaking, ceramics and mixed media.
Nick Cotter describes his photographic montages as ‘digisurrealism’, with dreamlike qualities and unexpected elements as he layers and weaves together his imagery. Brett Hornby also works in photography, sometimes with digital manipulation, and explores the elements of light, dark, hot and cold, and Jane Mahood’s mosaic works explore the elements of earth, air, water and fire, particularly through her use of colour.
Jane Davarian’s painting, drawing and mixed media works bring together elements of pattern, symbolism and mythology indigenous to some of the cultures and environments she has visited on her travels.
