Colouration

Colouration

Opening view: Tuesday 3 July, 6 - 8 pm

Cherry Lyons and Wendy Chudley respond to the themes and colours of the natural world using a lively variety of media: pastels, oils, watercolours and printmaking. Sketchbooks and journals will be on display in the gallery, and throughout the exhibition the artists will be painting in the gallery and happy to talk about their work at any time. Subject matter includes the varied landscapes of the south west, from moor, coast and woodland to the farmyard and its animals.

Wendy Chudley, well known locally for her atmospheric skies in pastels, shows a new collection of oil paintings focusing on capturing light and movement with traditional brush and palette knife techniques – and tools gathered from nature whilst painting en plein air.

New work by Cherry Lyons will include explorations in encaustic techniques. From the Greek meaning ‘to heat or burn in’, encaustic wax has been used decoratively for over 2000 years, and the availability of modern tools has repopularised this ancient art form. Courses, however, are few and far between, and Cherry has carried out a great deal of research into this challenging process involving the melting of beeswax and damar resin to create a molten wax medium for painting or pouring, building up fused, pigmented layers with intense heat.

"My garden studio now resembles a science lab and when working I can be found, blow torch in hand, looking like an extra from a Star Wars movie!"
