Arthur Glendinning
"My paintings grow out of an encounter with a landscape or event that imprints itself on my mind, and slowly evolves into an image I feel drawn to paint. A strong element of design and the interaction of figures in a landscape, a compelling memory from my travels, a vivid sketch, inspire me to stand a canvas on my easel. Ultimately it is the act of painting, applying the pigments, playing with the images, re-imagining the world perceived, that motivates me."
Arthur considers his painting as an extension of his practice as a Buddhist meditator, a practice which leads to a quiet mind and a stillness in which the other senses become attenuated.
"On my travels and treks in nature I find myself absorbed by vistas of aching beauty and the grain of sand that contains the world. Using a camera and sketch books I record these moments of insight that inspire me to paint and share my sense of wonder and delight."
As a freelance illustrator Arthur works on a small scale, little more than A4, and thus as a painter he finds working on a large canvas very liberating.
"The patterns of light and shade, texture, the movement of water and the human form in the landscape are an endless fascination for me and remain a constant source of inspiration."
