In “Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure: Otway the Movie”, which was funded entirely by his fans, cult UK singer John Otway returns to his old school to teach a course on survival in the music industry.

In the midst of Britain’s ‘70s punk revolution, and following a momentous TV appearance in which 5.5 million viewers saw him crash-land on his testicles, Otway enjoyed a fleeting taste of success with “Cor Baby That’s Really Free”, which reached number 27 in the UK charts. Too bad his next hit came 25 years later.

In between, there was a series of flops, mishaps and disasters – some through sheer bad luck, but mostly through rank incompetence. John Otway’s career is an instructional, yet magical lesson in self-promotion: recruiting his fans for endless manipulative, over-the-top projects which resulted in him being voted the nation’s 7th favourite lyricist in a BBC poll, secured him a Top Ten hit (number 9) for his 50th birthday and a feature film for his 60th, Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure.
