The Mill Next Door - Meet the Artist...

Globe Arts Studio is proud to present a one-woman show by local artist Sylvi Gibbs, in our intimate Globe Gallery, opening this Saturday 13th January. Her imaginative work captures her response to changes in the Colne Valley. Join us and meet the artist this Saturday 11am till 4pm - and again on Saturday 3rd February.

Sylvi lived next door to a working mill in Slaithwaite for over 30 years. Owned by Schofield and Smith’s Ltd, the mill was internationally famous for the production of top-quality worsted cloth.

When it closed, Sylvi retrieved discarded cloth and small bits of wood and metal from the abandoned site. These she used to tell her story of “the mill next door”, the moorlands and hills that surrounded it, and the beautiful cloth itself.

She admits to being “A bit obsessed by it”.
