Townscape 2014 Contemporary Art Trail East Grinstead
Townscape 2014 has launched!
Time-lapse photography at the Bluebell Railway, a quilt composed of children’s drawings, a mythical golden bird, portraits of well known faces round town, fluorescent subway stencils, an artist in residence in an ancient High Street Bookshop…these are just some of the newly commissioned art projects popping up around the mid Sussex town of East Grinstead.
An unprecedented contemporary art trail arrived in spring and runs for a period of six months. Each artist was asked to produce work specifically based around local themes.
The trail was initiated by Example, a contemporary art group based in the town and funded by Art Council England and other community partners.
Suggested walks take visitors and residents to well known and unusual locations. Sites are chosen for ease of access, making this a project the whole community can enjoy.
‘We want to celebrate art in East Grinstead, enhancing the town centre by bringing new and original art to freely accessible places. These can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike’ says Townscape’s coordinator Hannah Buckley ‘Routes take participants from the Jubilee Centre in the west all the way to the A22 subway on the eastern edge of town’. One town centre piece links to a sister piece showing in Standen House, a National Trust property just outside town.
Trail maps are available free from community hubs around town from now until November.
