Holocaust Memorial Day

Every year on 27 January, the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). The day for everyone to remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and the millions of people killed in Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. 27 January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Berkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. HMD has taken place in the UK since 2001.

As HMD falls on a Sunday in 2019, Doncaster Council is planning to hold commemorative activities on Friday 25 January to enable all to fully participate.

2019 theme: Torn From Home

Torn from home is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2019. Torn from home encourages audiences to reflect on how the enforced loss of a safe place to call 'home' is part of the trauma faced by anyone experiencing persecution and genocide. @Home' usually means a place of safety, comfort and security. On HMD 2019 we will reflect on what happens when individuals, families and communities are drive out of, or wrenched from their homes, because of persecution or the threat of genocide, alongside the continuing difficulties survivors face as they try to find and build new homes when the genocide is over. 2019 is the 25th anniversary of the Genocide in Rwanda, which began in April 1994.

Join us as we reflect upon these atrocities and join together in demonstrating our solidarity in combating anti-Semitism, racism and hatred.

This civic event will be opened by Councillor Nigel Ball. The day will include a blessing, readings and prayers given by invited guests, schools and local dignitaries and will conclude with a wreath being laid at the Memorial stone which is located in the grounds of Doncaster museum.
