Who’s Making a Scene in North Kirklees?

We’ve been busy over the past 18+ months, working with people to create a host of arts activities and cultural events that surprise, engage and inspire. We’d love you to come along and hear from our community and arts partners about what they have been up to and how it has affected them.

We have news of our programme for 2016 and 2017, and you can find out about our ambitions right up to 2020.

This event is FREE but places are limited.

Expect to hear about:

- How the Batley Business Association, local choirs, schools and dancers made a song and dance about the town, proved that Batley does Opera and did it brilliantly with the support of Opera North.

- What the folk of Dewsbury Moor love about lighting up their local park – and how an enchanting fire garden created with local young people shone a spotlight on the community around Crow Nest Park.

- How Heckmondwike Community Alliance is bringing the heritage of the town to life with cutting edge digital projections and installations, creating a whole new tradition of Illuminations to bring new life and business to the town centre.

- What landlords like about being part of The Local – a new network bringing short plays and new customers to their pubs, serving up new plays along with a pint.

- Which drama and musical societies want to be Scene Together – what they love about volunteering and performing, and how they are adding some extra sparkle to their productions.

- How festival audiences have been Spellbound by new music, literature, dance and digital projections in public spaces.

- The special places in North Kirklees that have inspired companies such as SpiltMilk, Chol, Impossible and PaBoomto create new work, and a major new commission for September’s Batley Festival from Periplum.

- How the ground-breaking Batley Bulldogs Girls Rugby League Club’s tour of Australia inspired playwright Kevin Fegan to get into The Ruck to write a new play – These Girls Can!

5.00 – 6.15 pm: Talks and interactive workshops

Hear from community commissioners, partners and artists including:

Textile Towns An international, online collaboration bringing young people from Dewsbury together with Tunisian partners in Ksar Hellal to create an exhibition of photography and poetry about their towns heritage.

Creative Scene on Screen Sit back and enjoy a whole range of films – find out how folk got spooked at HeckmondFRIGHT, how volunteers make Batley Festival, who’s got a Ticket to Ride and what the TransPennineExpress Next Station Will Be……

Life’s a Beach Hut Stories of home and belonging, a Connect Housing Association project with Chol Theatre.

Why our local cafes are buzzing with chatter as the Art Tea People settle down with a chair and a cuppa

How Like Mother Like Daughter brought a new group of intergenerational women together across cultures to create a unique new theatre experience with Complicite Creative Learning.

6.15 – 7.00pm: Why Make a Scene? In Conversation with the SceneMakers

SceneMakers come from many walks of life, and all are passionate about the potential for arts and culture to transform lives, bring communities together and create memorable and inspiring moments. Find out the many different ways they are involved, what they have learnt and what the emerging cultural ecology in North Kirklees looks like: join in a conversation not to be missed with our researcher from the University of Huddersfield, Prof Steve Swindells, and our evaluation partner Dr Erinma Ochu .

7.00 – 7.30pm: Join us for a closing cocktail with world class music and an *Elixir of Love”

With performances from Manasamitra and revisit the night Opera North and Batley did Opera with Batley Community Choir.

Orchid Banqueting Suite is 2 minutes from Dewsbury Train Station: turn right from the station entrance. Pay and Display car park at the Station, and also across the road from the venue.
