Bill Mitchell - An exhibition of his work - one day 25/01

The life's work of an art teacher and prolific contemporary artist from Devon is to go on exhibition at his home and studio.

The two-day exhibition at Barton, near Torquay, will feature a large portion of the 300 pieces of work produced by the late Bill Mitchell.

The 78-year-old, who passed away in June, showed his work both nationally and internationally during the 1970s, including through John Moore's Liverpool and a British Council exhibition.

The artist worked in a variety of mediums including painting on canvas, installation, sculpture, textiles, clay and etchings.

He studied at Falmouth Institute, Cornwall, and at Goldsmiths in London in the 1960s, before settling into a career as an art teacher at Knowles Hill Secondary School in Newton Abbot.

His daughter Chloe Mitchell said: "He was deeply affected by the corruption of war and religion and the effect this has on society, and this is strongly embedded in some of his artistic work.

"He was also very good at taking everyday items and turning them into something completely different."

More recently Mr Mitchell was involved in a number of local groups, such as the Art Farm Project at Rocombe Farm in Stokeinteignhead.

The exhibition will be open on Saturday this weekend, Jan 25th, and includes the opportunity to purchase some items, with prices ranging from £5 to £500.

It will take place at 109 Fore Sreet, Barton, Torquay, from 10am to 4pm
