Web Platform Development for the Comoodle Project
Kirklees’ Council has put out a tender for a strategic partner to support the development of a web based platform for the Comoodle project.
In September 2014, Kirklees Council was designated as one of the winners of the European Mayor’s Challenge, an innovation competition funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies and open to all cities in Europe. Other winners of the competition were Athens, Barcelona, Stockholm, and Warsaw. The competition prize was an award of €1million over three years.
Kirklees’ winning idea was the development of a new sharing economy, which would maximise untapped local resources and enable communities to do more with less. Unique to Kirklees’ idea is the willingness of Kirklees Council to pool its own idling assets with the non-profit sector; from vehicles to venues, and staff skills and expertise; making these assets available to community organisations through a project-focused online platform. If successful, the platform will also enable community groups to borrow and share assets with other community groups for the benefit of local projects and residents.
The desire for communities to do more with less is not unique to Kirklees. City governments everywhere face tightening constraints on resources alongside rising demands and high aspirations from citizens. It is therefore expected that the design of the Comoodle platform will be scaleable; initially across Kirklees, then with neighbouring boroughs and other local authorities nationally. By year three, it is hoped that the concept of Comoodle could be piloted internationally with another Bloomberg funded city.
