hcmf// - Calling Young Curators

hcmf// is preparing to launch an exciting new initiative aimed at developing talent and leadership amongst the music programmers, promoters and curators of the future.

Over the duration of the project, a team of six Young Curators with specific interests in issues of diversity, gender equality, and social inclusion will be chosen to take part in a specially designed training programme. In addition to benefitting from the expertise and experience of the hcmf// team, the participants will also have the hugely valuable opportunity to develop new works that can be tested within the region, and presented formally to audiences at a future edition of hcmf//.

hcmf// would like to hear from Yorkshire-based Young Curators who are already engaged in presenting cultural activity and events within their own communities and networks.

Funded through Kirklees Council’s successful bid to the Leeds LEP’s Business Rates Pool fund, not only will the project provide training and mentoring for the selected Young Curators, they will also receive a bursary to support their participation.

Commenting on the new Young Curators programme, hcmf//’s Artistic Director, Graham McKenzie, said: “hcmf// has a long and successful track record of working with young people, new talent and emerging musicians, composers and performers; receiving funding for the Young Curators programme now gives us a fantastic opportunity to play an important role in identifying and nurturing the next generation of music curators and programmers, which is an essential element of building a world class music offer in Kirklees. We’re really looking forward to getting recruitment for the scheme underway.”

Kirklees Council has set out the vision for Kirklees to become a place where everyone can hear world-class music through festivals and events; where children and young people have access to excellent musical experiences and education; and where the next generation of musicians and music professionals are supported to build and sustain high quality careers, by providing access to the very best industry advice, career opportunities and performance routes.

The Leeds City Region Business Rates Joint Committee backed 20 projects in all with total funding of £12.9m.
