Creative Industries Sector Deal unveiled
The government has announced £150m to “help cultural and creative businesses across Britain thrive”. The Creative Industries Sector Deal highlights commitments made by government and industry under four headings - places, ideas, business environment, and people. This is being heralded as great news, not just because of the money, but the acknowledgement that the creative industries constitute a serious player in the economy, currently worth £92bn a year and employing two million people. The investment includes a Cultural Development fund for cities and towns to bid for a share of £20 million to invest in creative and cultural initiatives. £33m goes to immersive technologies such as virtual reality games, interactive art shows and augmented reality experiences in tourism. A further element of the deal will invest in creative enterprise zones around the country to maximise the economic and job creation potential.
