Meet the Writer: Dean Atta – Brighton

The ‘Meet the Artist/Writer’ series showcases writers and artists from marginalised backgrounds and how they got their work ‘out there’.dean atta

As a writer, performer and teacher of poetry, Dean Atta has worked across the UK and internationally. He came to poetry as a personal therapeutic tool but soon found his words resonated with many people when he started performing at open mic nights in London. Dean has published one full collection of poetry and is currently working on his second. This session will be a discussion about the personal and public purpose of poetry, publishing and performing your work.

This event is open to the public but disabled and marginalised people will have priority booking.

Fee: FREE
Date: Tuesday 29th November 2016
Time: 2-3pm
Venue: Conference Room, Community Base, 113 Queens Rd. Brighton BN1 3XG

About the Writer:

Dean Atta has been described by the Huffington Post as “one of the leading lights in London’s poetry scene” and by Apples and Snakes as “unafraid to tackle topics other poets turn a blind eye to”. His debut collection, I Am Nobody’s Nigger, published by the Westbourne Press, was shortlisted for the Polari First Book Prize and he was named as one of the most influential LGBT people in the UK by the Independent on Sunday Pink List.

Dean Atta has performed widely across the UK and is an Associate Artist with Mouthy Poets and New Writing South. He has been commissioned to write poems for BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, Dazed & Confused, Keats House Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern.
