Claire Pinney Fine art/illustration/poetry
I create pictures to tell a story of our time - of life as we perceive it but with an gentle twist that reflects on some of the little absurdities and ironies of the human condition. Sometimes a little quirky and sometimes quietly subversive, the cartoon characters provide a degree of simplicity, perhaps naïvity to the work.
I enjoy portraying characters from my imagination in places of familiarity, enabling me to explore the hidden pockets of unknowing in the midst of the ordinary and everyday. Reconfigured in my mind, the scenes are presented back to the viewer with a subtle and sometimes humourous, sardonic or even satirical hue.
Influences range from the charm and sincerity of medieval illustration to the Neue Sachlichkeit art of Germany in the 1920s, and include the work of Paula Rego, Saul Steinberg, Mel Calman and Edward Gorey.
