Remembering and Reusing the Analogue: Research in The WAL

The Women's Art Library, housed at University of London Goldsmiths College, began as an artists' initiative that developed into an arts organization, publishing catalogues and books as well as a magazine, from the early 1980s to 2002. The main purpose, however, was to provide a place for women artists to deposit unique documentation of their work. Our guest speakers, Agata Hosnova, Gisou Golshani, and Mia Kordova will present their research in collaboration with WAL.

With a focus on the slides and cassette collection, they investigate the format and different approaches to the reading of these media today. The research project aims to examine the methodology of slides applied for academic and potential artistic practices and how analog information and archives might differ from the trend of digitisation.

The fascination between digital and analogue archives is manifested in a 24 frame slide presentation that has been processed from digital photos taken by phones while exploring the archive of special collections. The selection aims to represent the abstract framework of the archive through its curatorial endeavours and captures space and time and the overall experience. It formalistically reverses the nature of slides and literally frames the archive
itself.

The group will also present the interview they recorded on tape with Dr Althea Greenan, in which she explains her history with curating and handling material at the WAL. Gisou Golshani will present Trans-interference, which is a digital audio-collage using material from selected cassettes from the archive, and explores several layers of transfer-interference on storytelling and the female voice.

All the material created throughout the research found its way back to the archive and is now a part of the artistic collection.
