Out of Hours…. Out and About

Out of Hours…. Out and About

This month, we’re pleased to be bringing back our popular event Out of Hours. Unbelievably, it’s been over two years since our last Out of Hours event, whereby different speakers explore an individual artwork that holds a particular interest or resonance for them.

This time however, instead of focusing on the same exhibition we’ll be (virtually) visiting four exhibitions – traversing geographies in order to consider a wide range of artworks selected by four BMN members. Each speaker will select one piece of work from a current exhibition and will talk about the work from their own unique perspective.

Judith Alder will explore Hetain Patel’s exhibition Trinity at John Hansard Gallery (Southampton), whilst Cliff Crawford will look at Holly Hendry’s show Indifferent Deep at the De La Warr Pavilion (Bexhill-on-Sea). June Nelson will discuss Lisa Brice’s exhibition currently on display at Charleston (Firle, near Lewes). Lastly, Stephanie Sutton will consider the Jean Dubuffet retrospective at the Barbican, Brutal Beauty (London).

Each speaker will have the floor for approximately 15 minutes, including the opportunity for group discussion and questions. As before, this event will be informal and friendly, offering the opportunity for members to share their thoughts and ideas around a particular piece of work with likeminded peers. Do join us online if you can.

Participating speakers:

Judith Alder is a visual artist working across a range of media and processes including drawing, installation and moving image. She has initiated and managed numerous artist-led projects working with organisations across the UK and collaborating with museums, galleries, scientists, geologists, ethicists and academics. She is a member of the a-n’s Artist Council and a team member of the Eastbourne Culture Group and Full Frontal Eastbourne, advocating for art and artists in Eastbourne and beyond.

Cliff Crawford is a visual artist who is best described as an enthusiast with an inquiring nature. Cliff is fascinated by process and uses both traditional and digital media to explore real and perceptual change through repetition, re-evaluation and reduction. Observation is central to his art. He is currently working digitally to explore the use of Blender, Unity and Virtual Reality to create immersive art.

June Nelson is a Lewes-based artist from Wales who uses history and mythology to stand witness to often hidden or misrepresented lives. Materials and female agency matter; she makes art out of prosaic stuff, hoping for some poetry. She works in painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, and moving image, and is drawn to elusive surfaces, silence, mirroring, and ambiguity. During lockdown she has been collaborating online with her dance-artist daughter to produce ‘moving still lifes’ – large-scale anthropomorphic floral pieces, combining charcoal drawing and projection.
