John Nash: The Landscape of Love and Solace: Curator’s Tour

This month, we are very pleased to announce that we’ll be back at Towner for an exclusive tour of the current exhibition: John Nash: The Landscape of Love and Solace.

In a career spanning more than seven decades, John Nash produced work across a range of mediums, from iconic oil paintings to accomplished wood engravings, line-drawings, lithographs and watercolours. Combining acute observation and a strong individual vision, his oeuvre includes many of the finest depictions of the British landscape created in the 20th century. Often overshadowed by his brother and fellow artist Paul Nash, John Nash has not been the subject of a major exhibition since 1967.
The Landscape of Love and Solace contextualises the artist's life and work within the history of the 20th century, and in particular via his key relationships with Dora Carrington and Christine Kuhlenthal, who later became his wife. The exhibition also presents works from friends and peers including, Edward Bawden, Peter Coker, Charles Ginner, Spencer Gore, Harold Gilman, Cedric Morris, Eric Ravilious, and Carel Weight.
Join us on Thursday 23 September to hear Sara Cooper (Head of Collections and Exhibitions) discuss the life and work of John Nash. This will be our first in-person event since the start of the pandemic, and we’re excited to be back in the galleries to see this remarkable show.

Sara Cooper has over 15 years’ experience in exhibition curating and collections management. She has been at Towner since 2007, first as Collection Curator, before becoming Head of Collections and Exhibitions in 2020. She is responsible for overseeing and planning the Towner’s exhibition programme and the display, acquisitions, care, documentation and loans from the permanent collection, alongside the curatorial team.

Curated exhibitions include John Nash: The Landscape of Love and Solace (2021), David Nash: 200 Seasons (2019), Phoebe Unwin: Iris (2019), Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship (2017), William Gear: The Painter that Britain Forgot (2015), and Peggy Angus: Designer, Teacher, Painter (2014).

Sara was previously Collections & Exhibitions Curator at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, UEA Norwich. Whilst in this post she undertook an MA in Museology. Sara has a BA (hons) in Linguistics and Art History, and an MA in Modern European Art & Photography.
