In his third and final lecture in his Insiders v Outsiders series at Bagshaw Museum in Batley, art historian Simon Poë focuses on ‘Lord Leighton and the Academy of the Undead’.
The talk on Sunday, 10 February, looks at the work of Frederic Leighton, the President of the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1896 and the first British artist to be given a peerage, along with the threats to the establishment he represented from Impressionism and other newer, stranger movements.
“Leighton’s figures are often criticised for looking like animated statues or even corpses and, within the Academy, his brand of academic painting staggered on, zombie-like, well into the 20th century,” commented Simon.
“However, as the 19th century drew to a close, social anxiety began to manifest itself in books such as The Portrait of Dorian Grey and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published in 1897, the year after Leighton died.”
The lecture starts at 2pm. The entry charge is £3.50 per person; there is no need to book.
