Richard Slater & Arthur Homeshaw: A Retorspective
A look back at two South West greats at Artizan Gallery.
In September we'll be welcoming two South West greats to the gallery, linocut and pastel artist Arthur Homeshaw (1933-2011) and impressionist landscape artist Richard Slater. The exhibition will cover a broad selection of their combined lifeworks spanning originals from the 1940s to present day.
Arthur Homeshaw was a Westcountry artist whose work trapped into the deep-rooted flavours that represent the best in English art. [These perspectives are discernible in both his linocuts and his pastels. Furthermore, his work displays an imagination that is both exuberant yet introverted and at times secretive.
Richard Slater, “while not a household name (yet!), is far from unknown to his contemporaries, many of whom hold him in great esteem. Born in London in 1927, he attended Hornsey School of Art, which led to a long career teaching at the College of St Mark and St John, first in Chelsea and then in Plymouth. Moving to East Cornwall in 1973, he became a member of St Ives Society of Artists. He has won numerous awards and commissions and was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour. As well as The Artmill Gallery retrospective, this month also sees five of his paintings being shown at The Millinery Works Gallery in London, one of only ten artists chosen for display by influential art writer and historian, David Buckman.” (Simon Parker, WMN)
