Brundibar
Mahogany Opera Group comes to Watford Palace Theatre on 18 and 19 April with a critically acclaimed new touring production of Hans Krása’s Brundibár, the 1938 children’s opera famously performed over 55 times in World War II concentration camp Thereseinstadt.
Combining playful folk song with a powerful moral message about overcoming adversity, Brundibár tells the story of Aninka and Pepíček, who are too poor to buy milk for their ailing mother. When they try to busk for money in the square the evil organ-grinder Brundibár chases them away. With the help of a fearless sparrow, keen cat, wise dog and the town children, the courageous siblings hatch a midnight plan, eventually defeating Brundibár – and leading everyone in a joyfully triumphant musical finale.
A team of professional musicians, director, conductor and production staff is working with local Watford schoolchildren, to give young performers an amazing creative opportunity - and bring audiences an entertaining and uplifting professional production.
‘Brundibár emerges here as a beguiling score of alphabetical simplicity and melodic freshness that tugs at the heartstrings and sets feet tapping’ (The Daily Telegraph)
‘No praise is too high for the enthusiasm and commitment of the children as they threw themselves into their roles […] we were fully absorbed in their world’ (East Anglian Daily Times)
