Torbay Green Day now LoveLife on 2 wheels
ALL the fun of getting around on two wheels will be celebrated with a new event for all ages on Paignton seafront.
The loveLIFE on Two Wheels event on Saturday, September 22 will showcase the delights of spinning around by bicycle and scooter.
The aim is to get more people riding in the wake of the success of Team GB cyclists, including Sir Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish.
Bradley and Mark (pictured) will be riding in South Devon when the Tour of Britain comes to Dartmouth on September 15.
Far too many bikes are left languishing at the back of sheds or garages, and the day aims to get people to dust them off, bring them along and get riding.
The event, organised in partnership with Torbay Council and the Herald Express loveLIFE campaign partners, will be a chance to have a go yourself, whether you are new to cycling or would like to rekindle your love affair with the freedom and speed cyclists enjoy.
The aim is to bring together in one place everything you need to get started on two wheels, or even update your existing bike or scooter.
BMX and scooter enthusiasts will be beating a path to Parkfield and Paignton Green to see the skills and equipment offered by Madd Gear, a company with strong local connections which has an international fan base and will be bringing their team of pro riders to give displays.
Bike enthusiasts from the Mid Devon Cycle Club will be organising a circuit around the North Green which will be closed off to traffic so everyone can have a go at cycling laps of the traffic free route.
On the Green there will be British Cycling tuition for absolute beginners on two wheels or for those who want to improve their handling skills and the chance to see how fast you can sprint.
There will also be coaching in the fine art of unicycling.
Members of a new cycling group for women being set up in Torbay will be recruiting new members. They have trained new 'champions' to lead women-only rides.
The Parkfield centre with its top quality BMX track will be laying on events and entertainment.
A bike exchange scheme will be operating so you can bring one unwanted bike and get another one you are more likely to use, and Dr Bike will be there to carry out quick safety checks.
For those who don't fancy braving the weather, there will be demonstration of spinning on static bikes in a class which is an excellent way of getting or keeping fit.
Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust will be attending with their energy bike which challenges you to pedal hard enough to light some light bulbs.
They will also take an electric bike with them which you can check out.
The charity is currently bidding for a grant to create a cycle route network from the edge of Torbay to its seafront.
Cycle clubs and shops, Torbay Council, volunteer rangers from the cycling organisation Sustrans will have information stands at the show which will run from 10am to 3pm.
